"Did Science Originate from the Vedas and Get Adopted by the West? ISRO Chairman S. Somnath's Perspective"
ISRO chief S. Somnath ji said that the knowledge we had in Vedas about algebra, square root, concept of time, formation of solar system, Pythagoras theorem, all this knowledge had reached western countries through Arabic travellers. And then, after 1000 years, the same knowledge came back to us. But in the form of discoveries by great scientists of the western world.
In fact, while justifying his claims, he also mentioned the names of those books in which this knowledge is mentioned, like Surya Siddhanta, Pancha Siddhantika, Vedanga Jyotisha, Aryabhatiya, Bhaskara 1 and 2, Brahmasputra Siddhanta, etc. But is this true? Is it true that western countries have got all the knowledge that they claim to have from us? Well wisemen, I know, S. Somnath ji is a very credible source. But there have been some incidents in the past, where many such claims were found online, but after investigating them, it was found that they were not completely true.
So in this way, wisemen, because I run a science channel, then it becomes my scientific duty or scientific duty that I never believe things based on face value and go into detail and do research on it and bring the truth in front of you. Because honestly speaking, all our great scientific role models, like S. Somnath ji, whom we respect a lot, they also want us to develop a scientific mindset and not believe anything based on face value and learn a lot of new things on the path of finding the truth. In a previous content, I checked the claim of Pythagoras theorem, fact check, and it was found in our research that a Vedic sage had a big hand behind the evolution of Pythagoras.

So let's do a similar kind of fact analysis over here as well. And wisemen,, trust me, this time we have done a lot of deep research and brought all this information in front of you. To cross-verify the claims of S. Somnath sir, we read the concepts, meaning, translation of all our books carefully and surprisingly, we found all these concepts in them, all the way ranging from how planets move around the sun, size of earth, reasons of eclipse, gravity, speed of light, age of the universe, time dilation, atomic theory, and quantum physics.
Now, obviously, it is impossible to cover all these concepts in single post. And that's why we chose only those concepts, like gravity, age of the universe, time dilation, atomic theory, and quantum physics, which are more well-known and relatable for us science lovers. But if you want to know about the rest of the concepts, then put it in the comments below and part 2 will come to you soon.
For now, let's start verifying all these concepts and see if we really had the knowledge of all these things. So first of all, let's start with atomic theory and quantum physics. Now wisemen, many of us have already heard that the concept of atom was first given by our Indian philosophers.
But how many of you have actually verified it? Because you see, when it comes to facts, it is very important that we look at things not emotionally, but rationally, in a very unbiased way. And that's why with the same thought, we started looking for this atom concept in our ancient texts. And this is what we found.
The first verse of Chapter 11 of the Bhagwat Puran says, Maitreya Uvacha Charamah Sadhvisheshanaam Neko Asanyutah Sada Parmanuhah Savigyeyo Nunaam Maikya Bhramoyatah When we used these sites and translated them word to word, we got these results. Maitreya means name. Uvacha said, Charamah ultimate Sadhvisheshanaam Maneko Asanyutah means many of the God features are uncombined.
Inko alag alag leto, aneko ka multiple. Asanyutah ka unmixed. Then Sada is equal to always. Parmanuha means atom. Savigyeyo to be understood or heard or learned. Nunaam Maikya Bhramoyatah means the illusion of unity of men.Nunaam means bending men. Amaikya means unity. Bhramoyatah, mistake.
Yatah, because. Now if we arrange this logically, then I think it is being said that according to a scholar named Maitreya, the whole world is made up of ultimate unmixed units called atoms. Which come together to make an illusion of the human body.S
o kind of makes sense, right? But before coming to the direct conclusion, we should get this verified by a Sanskrit scholar. So there is a book, Bhagwat Puran English, which has been translated by two authors. One is J. L. Shastri, who is a translator.
And he has translated many Indian Vedic texts. And the other is G. V. Tagare, who has been a former member of the Maharashtra Education Service. If you look at this book, many Sanskrit shlokas have been translated into English and explained.

And if you look at page number 278 of this book, this shloka has been explained, making similar translations that we just made. But let's stop here for a second. There is another clue here.
Here we are talking about the illusion of reality related to atoms. And if you visualize both of them together, then what concept comes to your mind? Quantum physics, right? According to which all subatomic particles exist not as a solid but as a fuzzy wave, which is creating an illusion of reality all around us. Because they are popping in and out of existence.
So this was our next clue. What do we have to look for when we research in this direction? You won't believe what we found. We literally found that Erwin Schrödinger, had once said that the unity and continuity of Vedanta are reflected in the unity and continuity of wave mechanics.
Now this is entirely consistent with Vedanta, concept of all in one. Now this word is not mine, it belongs to Erwin Schrödinger. And you must know how big was Schrödinger's contribution.
He was one of the pillars of quantum theory. You must have heard about Schrödinger's equation or Schrödinger's cat. He himself has written in his book.
In this book, you can also see that Schrödinger is saying that this life of yours which you are living is not merely a piece of the entire existence but is in a certain sense the whole. Only this whole is not so constituted that it can be surveyed in one single glance. Meaning, the life you are living is not just a piece of the entire existence, but is a complete entity whose composition is quite fuzzy that we cannot detect it in one glance.
The chapter in which Schrödinger has placed these lines in his book is called the Vedantic Vision. Yes, this is the well-known concept which says that this world which is made up of material reality is basically a cosmic illusion. And our Atman or soul is basically a part of the ultimate being called Brahman.
Now, Brahman can mean the entire universe as an entity or Brahman can mean God. However you want to perceive it. And in fact, according to philosophy, Atman is equal to Brahman and the material world is an illusion.
He has repeated this in his second book, What is Life? So wisemen, it is a very deep and interesting thing which has been done in a very ancient time. So now what does it mean that the Indians did not discover quantum physics or without Vedas, quantum physics could not have been discovered? Well, not exactly. We should not forget that Vedanta is a philosophy and quantum physics is an established framework of science which defines reality through established mathematical rules.
Here it is important to understand that no philosophy gives us an established mathematical model, does not give us a framework. And that's why it can be said that they may have been influenced. And it did happen.
They were quite influenced by Vedantic ideas. And in fact, they shared the same things with Werner Heisenberg, who is another backbone of quantum physics. Now, you must have heard about the uncertainty principle of Werner Heisenberg.
It was published in 1927. And according to the Hindu newspaper referred by UPSC students, when Heisenberg came to India in 1929 and stayed here as a guest of Rabindranath Tagore, then he had a lot of discussions on the Vedic philosophies of Heisenberg. And from that, he realized that the uncertainty principle he was considering weird and was considering the entire quantum physics to be quite unintuitive, if it is ever introduced to Vedic people, then all Indians will easily accept it.
Because we are already inspired by Vedas. He literally once said that quantum theory will not look ridiculous to people who have read the Vedanta. Some of the ideas of quantum physics that had seemed so crazy suddenly made so much more sense.
Anyway, this just shows that quantum physics was discovered separately. But since its concepts were quite similar to Vedic philosophies, then in the mind of the quantum physicist, he increased the respect for those Vedic texts. So now let's move on to the next concept which is time dilation.
You heard it right and I know you'll find this interesting. So time is a quantity which famous scientists like Newton also considered to be an absolute quantity. According to our Vedas, it is a relative quantity.
I mean, just think in terms of common sense. We all consider time to be absolute, right? My time will be the same as yours. And the speed with which time moves for me, will also move for you.
But here in the Vedic texts, it was already kind of insinuated that time is not an absolute quantity, it is a relative quantity. Now when we searched it on Google, we found out that the 17th shloka of the 8th chapter of Bhagavad Gita saharstriyug pariyantam haryad brahane viduh ratriyug saharatya sranta teho ratra vidho janaha This shloka talks about time dilation. Now most articles usually translate it in this way.
By human calculation, a thousand ages taken together form the duration of Brahma's one day. And such also is the duration of his night. So to cross verify this, we did a word-to-word translation Sahastra means thousand Yug means generation Pariyantam means up to the present Yat means that Brahm means Brahma Viduh means they know Ratri means night Saharatya sranta teho ratra means day night Vidho janaha means the people This word-to-word translation clearly shows that Brahma's day and night are compared to a thousand generations But to be 100% sure that we don't misinterpret it, we also verified what other scholars have to say on this shloka.
We found an English translation of the Gita which was translated by Aladi Mahadeva Shastri Now those who don't know, let me tell you that Oriental Library means the library where ancient eastern civilizations like Persia, Arabia and India were researched. So in his book, page no. 231 if you see, the translation of this shloka is given which is similar to the translation of the articles.
And as a second reference, we found the translation of this shloka by the founders of Banaras Hindu University Annie Besant and Bhagwan Das in their English translation of Gita. I also saw the meaning of this shloka According to them, the people who know the day of Brahma a thousand ages in duration and night a thousand ages in ending they know the day and night. Now from both these translations, we can understand that there are two different realms or we can say even dimensions where time is relative.
That is, when a thousand eras pass on earth, then a day of Brahma passes. That is, clearly time is not absolute but relative. The knowledge of this was present in ancient India which is quite surprising and fascinating.
But wisemen, some people cite a calculation based on this concept and claim that in Vedas, the age of the universe has also been accurately calculated. So when we were testing the authenticity of this claim, we found a book written by Dr. S.V. Gupta who works in the National Physical Laboratory. In this, he has used all the units used for measurement and has done their documentation.
In this, we got the calculations of the universe given in Vedas. So let's see whether Vedas has accurately calculated the age of the universe. So according to this book, one day of Brahma is equal to 4.32 billion human years.
Similarly, one night of Brahma will also be 4.32 billion years. So total day and night of Brahma is equal to 8.64 billion human years. Assuming that there are 30 days in a month, then one year of Brahma would be 3.11 trillion human years.
So now we just have to find out how many years of Brahma have passed In short, we just have to find out the current age of Brahma. So for this, we started searching in Vedas and found a shloka.
पर्मा यूह शंत तस्य तया हो रात्र सडख्खाया आयूशो अमिन्त तस्य शेष कलपो अयम दिमहा जिसका स्कॉलर्स के मुताबेग , his extreme age is a hundred.
According to this valuation of a day and night, the half of his life is past, of the remainder this is the first aeon. याने, according to the Vedas, universe के formation के बाद 50 ब्रह्म years बीच चुके हैं. So इसके according, age of the universe is equal to 50 x 3.11 trillion human years is equal to 155 trillion human years.
Now, I know, यह हमें the value we know today is 13.8 billion years off from that. So we can say that the age of the universe has not been accurately calculated in Vedas. But still, just thinking that in such an ancient civilization which is 3000 years old, people are still thinking about the formation and death of the universe is still mind boggling.
But this also tells us that not everything in Vedas has been given accurately. Now let's move on to our next concept, which is Gravity. As we all know, Newton is credited for its discovery.
So was this concept really already present in Vedic texts? Well, when we started investigating this, we found many articles claiming that the concept of gravity was already present in India. From these articles, we came to know that this concept was written in a book of Indian astronomy, Surya Siddhanta, on page 315 of the 12th chapter of the 4th century CE. So let me read the shloka and tell you.
मद्धिये समन्ता धन्डस्य à¤ुगोलो वियोम्नी तिष्ठति विà¤्राणः परमाशक्ति ब्रहनो धार्नात्मे काम
According to those articles, this translation comes. The spherical earth stands at the center of the earth in space due to the dharnatma kaam shakti which prevents earth from falling away and helps it to stand firm. Now again, to test its authenticity, we ourselves translated this shloka word to word and this is what we got.
मद्धिये, in the middle, amongst, between समन्ता धन्डस्य, of the round rod à¤ुगोलो, terrestrial globe, earth ball वियोम्नी, in the sky तिष्ठति, stand विà¤्राणः, carrying परमाशक्ति, the ultimate शक्ति, energy, power, strength ब्रहनो, brahman धारणात्मे काम, retention oriented याने to possess or to use or control something Now, I know as such, you may not be able to make any sense out of this but it gives you a general idea that here, due to some power of the earth, it is said to be in the sky. And then we translated the whole shloka and the results were In the middle of the round rod, the earth rests in the sky Bearing the supreme power of Brahman, the self of sustainment After this, as a final step, we saw how other Sanskrit scholars and translators have interpreted this particular shloka And then we found two credible English translated versions of the Surya Siddhant book First, Brown University's Professor of Mathematics Ibn-e-Azhar Burghess's book According to which, the translation of this verse is Quite in the middle of the egg, the earth globe stands in the ether Bearing the supreme might of the Brahma, which is of the nature of self-supporting force And the second translation was Indian astronomer and professor of astronomy at Queen's College Varanasi, Pandit Bapu Devashastri According to which, its translation is The terrestrial globe possessing Brahma's most excellent power of steadiness Remains in space at the center of Brahman, which is all around So from both these translations, it is understood that In the shloka, a force is being talked about Because of which the earth is standing steadily in space Now you will say that there is no life in this So how can we assume that the concept of gravity is being talked about here And yes, I agree It would be wrong to say that gravity started from here as a concept But we cannot deny the fact that 3,000 years ago, civilization had a general idea That due to some force, the earth stands in its place in space Now interestingly wisemen, when I was researching on gravity Then I also read in many articles That in the fourth shloka of chapter 50 of Rig Veda The speed of light has been mentioned And not just mentioned, but it has also been calculated and its exact value has also been given So let's see if this claim is also correct Or like the age of the universe, it has also been misinterpreted Now according to many articles, its translation is The light coming from the source of light is illuminating the planets in the solar system That is, it is giving light Now as you saw this translation It is only describing light, not its speed So now the question arises that why are all these articles talking about exact calculation Now to understand why this is so, when I researched in a little detail Then it came to light that its value is not given in Rig Veda In fact, a Sanskrit and Vedic scholar had given its exact calculation In fact, in the 14th century, when Maharishi Sainacharya was analyzing Rig Veda Then he added another shloka made by himself with this shloka And the value of the speed of light was told in that shloka So that shloka was this Now we have done word to word and overall translation of this shloka So tatha means truth Chha means and Smaryate means be recorded Yojanaana means nine miles Sahastra means kilometer Dave means two Shate means hundred Yojane means addition Eke na nimishardhena means in a moment Kramaman means proceeding And namohasthute means I bow down to pray Now its translation was With deep respect, I bow down to the sun who travels 2,202 yojanas in half a nimisha Now wisemen,, this was our analysis But for more surety, let's see the opinion of a third-person perspective, that is, scholars So on 15th January 2021, a member of PMST ISE, Professor Subhash Kak published a paper By the name.
The Speed of the Light and Puranic Cosmology This shloka was explained at the beginning of this paper There is another scholar, H.H. Wilson, who was a Sanskrit professor at Oxford University If we look at page 70 of his book, we will see the same shloka But can this shloka really calculate the speed of light? Because it uses the units used in ancient India Which can be easily misinterpreted to suit your own narrative Keeping this in mind, I googled the words nimisha and yojana used in this shloka So here are the results According to Vishnu Puran, four hands is equal to one dhanush And one dhanush has an average height of 6 feet Similarly, 8000 dhanus form a yojana Which means one yojana is equal to 48000 feet And if we convert feet into miles, we get 9.09 miles Which means one yojana is equal to 9.09 miles Now in Sainacharya's shloka, 2202 yojana is mentioned Which means 18379.98 miles Now let's talk about nimisha So one nimisha is equal to 0.2 seconds And here we are talking about half nimisha which is 0.1 seconds Now speed is equal to distance upon time Is equal to 18379.98 divided by 0.1 Which is 183799.8 miles per second Which means if we convert it into kilometers per second Then we get 2,95,797.10 kilometers per second Which is pretty damn fascinating Because this value is only 1.33% off from the value of modern speed of light It was really damn so accurate So wisemen, all in all, what have we learned so far? So see, till date people have not been able to understand Vedic philosophy properly Many people think that Vedas mentions God And science does not accept God without evidence .

Then science is wrong Science knows nothing, it always keeps changing It is confused Well, now why is it wrong to have these two extremities? Why is it wrong to have these two extremities? Because this is why a strict religious person does not fully accept science And a person with a strict scientific point of view Is not able to see our Vedic culture with the eyes of pride and respect Now wisemen, listen to this very carefully Because next time you will never fight again In the Vedic times, there were six schools of thought Which refer to the universe through atheistic thinking And there were five schools of thought Which describe the universe through atheistic thinking And all of these together comprise Vedic philosophy That is, Atheist plus Atheist is equal to Vedic philosophy An Atheist philosophy in which God is believed And in which all these schools of thought come And the second Atheist philosophy in which God is not believed In that all these schools of thought come Now the atheistic schools of thought basically question Vedas And then derive their logical conclusions and contradictions And then they are born from it And you know what In Vedic culture, the greatest focus has always been given to finding the truth And then whether your path is Atheist or Atheist And this is the most proud feature of our culture That we have not been taught to blindly believe in anything But we have this freedom That whichever path we choose, we can find the truth from that path And still we can be called Hindu It is not that the atheistic schools were given a lower rank in Hindu philosophy In fact, you will not believe The Charvakas and Jain monks who only believe in material reality They could have conducted a respectful debate on the basis of logic from an ancient time to an Atheist king Like for example, once a Jain monk Vijay Simha Challenged a king Paisi about the existence of a soul for a debate And in that, even though that king held more power in society He debated with that monk with the help of his courtroom religious scholar Pingkesa That too in a proper civilized manner Proving his points logically and with examples You will find many such examples throughout Indian history Where debates have been encouraged a lot And this just shows that India is a land of truth seekers not preachers And we are all Indians Whether you are an Atheist or an Atheist We all come from such a rich culture In which everyone has the freedom to present their thoughts And to give logical arguments on other people's thoughts And that is why wisemen, whether you call it Hindu culture or Vedic culture It is not a faith Faith means that you just have to have faith in something Have faith and there can be no debate on it Take Galileo for example He did not have freedom in Christian faith That he could debate that what is written in the Bible is wrong And the sun does not revolve around the earth but the earth revolves around the sun We consider Greek civilization to be the most liberal and democratic civilization And there have been many great philosophers in it Like Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Democritus and many more Although there were debates on different things in them But then you must also know what happened to Socrates His atheistic thoughts did not spread much That is why in the name of provoking the disrespect and youth of the gods He was poisoned and killed Now our Hindu culture is also based on scientific and truth-seeking process like ancient Greeks But here there is even more freedom Whether you believe it or not You will still be counted under the Hindu or Vedic umbrella And that's the beauty of our culture and this land And that's why wiseme, it is important for us to love our roots So that our modern scientists can also read our philosophical texts without any shame or hesitation And can also promote them And can decipher the knowledge given to them by
Western scientists like Schrodinger and Heisenberg And can build their modern theories by being inspired by them You should not forget this at all The work of philosophy is to inspire ideas And if all of us Indians respect our ancient culture, our ancient scriptures And start reading them Then we can get a lot of new fresh ideas Now wisemen, in this content, I would like to know your opinion What do you think about this matter? Was scientific thought promoted in our Vedic times or not? Write your opinion in the comments And yes, don't forget to check out the Pythagoras theorem post
In that too we have uncovered Whether Pythagoras theorem was invented in India or not Share this post.to as many people as possible So that they also know about our culture and our scientific temperament See you next time, till then stay curious, keep learning and keep growing , be progressive and take it as revolution.
